There is currently no cure for either dry or wet Macular Degeneration, however, there are several treatments that can slow, stop and in some cases reverse the effects and progression of the disease. These treatments differ in their effectiveness based on the patient and how early on the disease is caught. It should be noted that early diagnosis of AMD could mean a far more likely opportunity to combat the disorder.
The available treatments of AMD are:
Nutritional Supplements: Vitamins rich in antioxidants such as lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin taken early into the diagnosis of dry AMD have shown great results in stopping and in some cases reversing the progress of the disease;
Anti-vascular Growth Factor Treatments: Involves injections directly into the eye to treat wet AMD and prevent new blood vessels from growing;
Photodynamic Therapy: Using light-activated drugs to prevent the growth of new blood vessels can stop the progression of wet AMD; and
Laser Therapy: Using lasers to destroy new blood vessels as they grow can slow the development of wet AMD.
